Break Yr. Bedroom, Exhibit B: Shoppers / Panzram 7"
(the current music you should destroy your stuff to)
Shoppers / Panzram: Split 7" (Feeble Minds & IFB)
Shoppers:
1. I
2. II
Panzram:
1. Born With A Bad Haircut
2. Cause Celebre
Everyone has a crush on Shoppers. Or at least, I have a crush on Shoppers. This, their most recent effort, does not disappoint. The two songs presented here see the band taking what I could call a more melody-driven approach, but at the end of the day, this is still the same blown-out, noisy punk rock that everyone loves, and it lines up nicely with their previous offerings. The lyrics are great, the packaging is charming, and everyone at Maximum RocknRoll will probably put this on their "Best of 2012" list. Shoppers played here at Vassar back in December, and they were tight. They're even nice kids! If you get a chance to see this band, see this band. They'll get you through the bad times. Upstate knows what's up.
And now, personal anecdote to make up for lack of knowledge: I caught Panzram once at Stolen Sleeves in Brooklyn, playing with I think Slobs, and maybe CREEM? At the time, I didn't think much one way or the other about the band; they played last, and I remember their set mostly as a lot of feedback, sweat, and long-hair. I did like the dude's voice, but in the end the image of the band that I took away from that show was of "those two weird metal dudes." Panzram's side here might be a sleeper for some people, especially people like me, for whom it takes a week or two to actually turn the record over. Happily, it is in fact a ripper. The band fills up their five-minutes-and-change (okay, twenty-seven seconds of change, I'm not cool or casual) with blown-out, noisy hardcore, though admittedly after a different fashion than Shoppers. I still really like the vocals. If I'm going to make comparisons, the first band that comes to mind is Brooklyn's Pollution. There's also a moment in "Born With A Bad Haircut" that does noise like The Locust does noise, but someone can beat me up for that comparison later.
